Air plants, also known as tillandsias, have garnered popularity among plant enthusiasts due to their unique ability to thrive without soil. With their striking appearance and low-maintenance requirements, air plants have become a go-to choice for many indoor gardeners. However, despite their reputation for resilience, these captivating plants can still meet an untimely demise if not properly cared for. In this blog post, we delve into the reasons why air plants may wither away, aiming to equip you with the knowledge needed to ensure the health and longevity of these exceptional botanical wonders.
Inadequate watering: While air plants are known for their ability to absorb moisture from the air, they still require regular watering to maintain optimal health. Many air plant enthusiasts mistakenly believe that occasional misting or occasional dunking is sufficient. In reality, air plants need more thorough hydration. Lack of proper watering can lead to dehydration, causing the plant's leaves to curl, turn brown, and eventually die. To prevent this, it is crucial to provide air plants with a proper soak in water for 20-30 minutes every one to two weeks, depending on environmental conditions.
Poor air circulation: Air plants have evolved to thrive in environments with excellent air circulation. Placing them in stagnant or poorly ventilated areas can hinder their growth and make them susceptible to rot. When air doesn't circulate effectively around the plant, moisture tends to accumulate, creating a breeding ground for fungus or bacterial infections. To promote healthy airflow, consider placing air plants near a fan, an open window, or in a room with good ventilation.
Insufficient light: Another critical factor that affects the well-being of air plants is light exposure. While they don't require direct sunlight, air plants do need sufficient bright, indirect light to thrive. Inadequate light can cause them to weaken, become pale in color, and eventually decline. Find a spot near a window with filtered light or use fluorescent or LED lights if natural light is limited. Rotate your air plants periodically to ensure all sides receive equal light exposure.
Improper temperature and humidity: Air plants originate from diverse habitats, ranging from tropical rainforests to arid deserts. Maintaining suitable temperature and humidity levels is crucial for their survival. Extreme temperatures, either too hot or too cold, can damage air plants, leading to browning, wilting, or even death. Aim for a temperature range of 50-90°F (10-32°C), and provide moderate humidity levels between 40% and 60%. In dry climates, misting the air plants occasionally can help increase humidity levels.
Neglecting nutritional needs: While air plants can absorb nutrients through their leaves, they still require supplemental nutrition to thrive. Lack of essential nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, can weaken the plants over time, making them more susceptible to disease and decline. To ensure optimal growth, water with natural rainwater during growth months.
Although air plants are known for their ability to survive in unconventional conditions, they still require proper care and attention to flourish. By understanding the reasons behind their demise, such as inadequate watering, poor air circulation, insufficient light, improper temperature and humidity, and neglecting nutritional needs, you can take proactive steps to ensure the health and longevity of your air plants. With the right care, these captivating plants will reward you with their unique beauty and resilience, transforming any space into a stunning green oasis.

Using the amethyst to meditate draws this negativity-clearing power from the stone, allowing for more positive thoughts and clarity of mind.
Protection: Just as the amethyst clears negative energies, it also protects the space it's placed in from anxiety-inducing or harmful vibrations. Place by the front door on a console table to shield your space from any negativity that may enter your home.

I often chat at markets about how the rainbow fluorite crystal is a great stone for indecisiveness. It helps enhance mental clarity and can bring a more positive mindset when you’re in a tough situation. But did you know it’s also one of my favourite crystals to gift to friends?

Although some of you may already be familiar with air plants, I am often asked these questions (and more) while chatting with customers at markets. Air plants have made a major comeback within the last few years, likely due to their “low-maintenance plant” status and more people trying to bring plants into their homes.
Though air plants are truly low-maintenance, they are far from NO-maintenance. Some TLC is still required to keep your air plant thriving, especially through weather conditions they’re not used to.
Where do air plants come from?
Many people think that air plants and succulents come from the same plant family, but that could not be further from the truth! Air plants are actually tropical plants and prefer warm, humid climates, while succulents are desert plants which prefer drier weather. The care is therefore very different between the two plants (even though I sell, and therefore take care of both).
Why don’t air plants have roots?
The air plant root system is only developed for them to grasp onto tree trunks/walls and other surfaces, and does not actually absorb any moisture. In their natural environments, air plants use their roots to hold themselves to a high-humidity spot in order to absorb the humidity from the air through their leaves. So, air plants don’t actually need roots to survive! So if you see me trimming the roots on my air plants, this is why – also because they’ll sit a little nicer in their crystal air plant holders without the roots.
Do air plants need water?
YES! Air plants absolutely need water. Although they are named “air” plants, they will not survive as indoor plants without watering… unless you live in a greenhouse. We simply do not have enough moisture inside our homes to keep air plants happy without watering. This is why I would recommend soaking your air plant in water every 10 days to 2 weeks. More details here.
Do air plants need sun?
Another big YES – but not in the way you would think. Air plants are used to dappled sunlight or partial shade, as they are used to being covered by branches and big leaves. Indirect sun is best and SOME direct sun is okay, but too much direct sun will deplete all moisture from the plant and sear its leaves! That being said, air plants will not survive in no light whatsoever. Artificial light is also helpful (though not ideal) if no natural light source is available.
Are air plants toxic to pets?
Air plants are pet-safe plants, another reason that makes them a great option when it comes to adding green to the home. I’ve had customers who have had their little air plants chomped on by their fur buddies and needed replacement plants, but fortunately, they will cause no harm to their health!
Are air plants real?
Some of you may have seen my letterboard sign at markets that tell you, “YES, THE PLANTS ARE REAL!” I know it’s hard to imagine a plant that’s capable of surviving with minimal care, but nature is incredible! If you don’t believe me, just look at how crystals are formed – another crazy feat of nature. I loved that I discovered air plants when I started Pine Flora, and now so many can easily bring plants into their homes, with no soil and no fuss. So, yes, again, the plants are real, and every air plant holder comes with its own air plant.

In the spirit of saving where I can, I went to Dollarama today to look at some options for display stands and found pieces that could be great for adding dimension to different layouts. I am quite accustomed to shopping at Dollarama and repurposing things for business use. As an example, the stand you see in this photo is actually the bottom side of a drawer organizer. I like putting my crystals at different levels to keep them from blending into a sea of confusion for buyers lol.
If you want to see some of the other pieces I picked up, head to my TikTok or Instagram :)
]]>The countdown continues! Today was filled with product-making, lots of stamping, and preparing orders for shipment. I started the day buying bags at Creative Bag in Toronto. It seems like OOAK isn't offering reusable bags this year at the show (COVID reasons), so I figured that more bags would probably be a good idea.
So thankful that my lovely cousin Vanessa lended a hand in doing all the stamping! This freed up time for me to work on orders and product... which took longer than I anticipated. I'm also currently hooked on Season 3 of the show You on Netflix so I only got about 5 hours of sleep last night, which probably didn't help.
Today's OOAK tip(s): Take all the help you can get & don't leave the boring things until last minute. A lot of the times, I assume quick and mundane tasks (like stamping) would not hinder my progress, but I am always wrong lol -- especially when I'm stamping bags and boxes at these quantities. Also, pay attention to new posts in the One of a Kind Artisans Facebook group! A lot of things are asked and answered about the show by other vendors, and could remind you of details you forgot.

]]>Happy November!
As cliché as it is to say, 2021 has flown by. After two years of intense uncertainty, numerous cancellations and using the word "pivot" in a way that's borderline annoying, I am finally heading to my very first One of a Kind Show in Toronto! (Tickets now available for purchase)
I want to take you on this preparation journey with me, since taking on this large-scale event seemed daunting enough pre-pandemic, let alone in our current state... whatever that may be. Having this outlet somehow makes it a bit less overwhelming. If you're a fellow maker that's stumbled upon this blog looking for information on how to prepare yourself for this show (or any show), please reach out to chat! What I've learned so far is that the One of a Kind community is one that's incredibly helpful and I would love to return the favour and help other makers in whatever way I can :) If you're not a fellow maker, I'd like to welcome you as well! I hope this gives you a glimpse into the hard work I put into my craft :)
PRE DAY 24:
I know I'm counting down from 24, but prep actually started weeks ago. Suppliers are still backlogged and slower than normal to ship, but thankfully I've adapted to that within the last year and knew I needed to order early. Few things I've already completed:
To be honest, it's been hard to be continuously proactive with these purchases, as each line item has a cost associated with it. As someone who has never done the show before, I have no idea what to expect, especially this year. There was a lot of time wasted in previous months while I debated whether to even stock up on supplies in case the show got cancelled again. For me, the initial investment is significant when it comes to a show like this, so I really had to plan out my goals in terms of how much I would need to sell to make the most of this event. This was one of the most difficult things to consider as I was preparing.
DAY 24:
Ok, starting the countdown! I started the day with making a batch of products (as they take time to cure) and putting together my regular orders. Since we're less than a month out, I had to figure out whether I needed more supplies and whether they'd arrive in time for the show. I have a supplier that I've placed orders with a month ago, and they likely won't be dispatching my items until next week! I also have suppliers that ship within 2 days and my orders arrive within a week, which I'm so incredibly thankful for. KNOW YOUR SUPPLIERS. I learned this lesson the hard away a few Decembers ago. Long story short, I placed another order for supplies just now lol.
I also tested my lighting for my shelves and they seem to work okay! In the One of a Kind Artisans Facebook group, a lot of vendors stress about the importance of lighting so I made sure to have that figured out. For anyone interested, I ended up getting these: (Pack of 8) Kihung Under Cabinet Light 2ft, 10W, 1100lm, 4000K Cool White, Utility led Shop Light, LED Ceiling Light and T5 LED Tube Light Fixture, Corded Electric with Built-in ON/Off Switch
I have yet to purchase my second shelf for the show (I have a 3x3 space) and will get to that likely sometime this week. The shipping on that is quick, and I'm building that shelf during set-up, so this isn't as pressing as all the other items on my to do list.
If you'd like more of a visual on my day, check out Pine Flora on TikTok or Instagram :)

There have been studies on how houseplants promote a more positive environment. Perhaps it's the pop of green as a visual stimulus that ignites a spark in the brain. Maybe it's the way plants quietly absorb toxins from the air, with some even expelling oxygen 24/7 (aloe vera). Whatever it may be, there's no denying that plants do contribute to a more joyful living space, especially during winter.
That being said, a lot of houseplants also struggle during the winter. The limited hours of sunlight can make it hard for plants too... a plant version of SAD (seasonal affective disorder), if you will. Because they receive less sunlight during the winter, it takes a bit longer for soil to dry out. For the most part, it's safe to change up your watering schedule and give plant soil a few more days to dry fully before watering again. As with all plants during all seasons, how your plant thrives really depends on your environment, so watch for any changes and adjust accordingly.
This element of care also contributes to the positive aspects of owning a plant. The ability to take care of something other than myself also provides a sense of achievement, even if it's just for a tiny little air plant.
